Have a taste of fairytale at this new whimsical restaurant & bar: Poison Apple

Feel the magic at Poison Apple, a fairytale-inspired restaurant and bar that is situated in the heart of Sunway City. Serving up whimsical meals and artistically presented drinks, this is the perfect spot for one to escape from reality. The joint is also known for their amazing happy hour deals that will actually make your wildest drinking fantasies come true.

Your fairytale journey starts by entering the iconic little Hobbit wooden door inspired by the legendary film, Lord of the Rings. Once in, you’ll be greeted by a wishing well that is oozing of smoke, a large beanstalk-like pillar with poison apples hanging and the best ones yet, their moving portraits and holographic fairies.

Everything about Poison Apple makes you feel like a fantasy character out of the book you used to read as a kid. The whole setting was inspired by the Poison Apple Tavern which appeared in the animated movie Shrek. It is the spot where villains gathered to have terrifying food and “unhappy hour.” So make sure to be bewildered when you see elves, wizards and witches taking your orders, instead.

Poison Apple isn’t just about the beautiful ambiance but it’s also where you can enjoy some of their signature dishes and potions.

Fairytale Themed Cocktails

You will be spoiled with choices as there are over 200 different wines and liquors sourced from all over the globe as well as a range of beers. There are also a series of fairytale themed cocktails that we urge you to try out.

The Poison Apple Signature cocktail is a special concoction inspired by mermaid tales and finished with a daring presentation: a smooth-sipping vodka and green apple syrup with soda.

Whilst, the Snow White’s Potion is a magical touch of vodka with white creme de cacao and coconut cream. Basically, their whimsical version of the classic Piña Colada.

The Witch’s Voodoo Cauldron, on the other hand is a fruity red wine infused with mixed berries and topped with whipped cream and cocoa powder.

Turn the heat up with Mala & Szechuan peppers

Besides a charming drinking atmosphere, Poison Apple also offers hearty and delicious fusion dishes on their menu. If you’re one to enjoy some heat, try my personal favourite, the Griffin Wings with a Mala kick. This notoriously spicy dish will leave your tongue and lips numb and tingly but still tasty enough to make you go for a second piece.

Then, there is the Spicy Unicorn Leg –– a soft and succulent lamb shank cooked with fiery Szecuan & Pepper sauce served in a hot stone pot. The hearty, flavoured-pack lamb meat was tender and juicy, even with the hint of spice kicking through.

Another spicy dish you’d surprisingly come to love is the Chilli Phoenix. It is a smoked kampung chicken covered with dried chillies with a hint of applewood smokiness. In first glance or even smell, you probably would assume they’ve accidentally burnt the dish. However, we were dumbfounded when we had our fair share of the meat –– astonishingly delicious. It’s fall-off-the-bone tender and smoky flavour was truly exceptional.

Known as the Red Queen Spaghetti, this Mala infused pasta cooked with Szechuan pepper sauce with a choice of minced beef or chicken. I personally thought the level of spiciness of this dish was a little over the top as I couldn’t taste anything but the chilli. However, with a few tweaks, it can be a really good dish.

Poached lobsters with eggs

A whole poached lobster is served in a stone pot with whipped eggs poured on top by the servers in front of you, taking around 15-20 minutes for the dish to be ready. But sadly, once the dish thoroughly cooked, we found it to be a little underseasoned. Like the pasta dish – with few tweaks, it could be a great dish to go with.

Though all in all, Poison Apple is one of those bars where you can play dress-up whilst enjoying all day drinking deals that you just can’t resist.
